Ever since a very young age we are raised with the thought that manners are important. They tell us we have to be polite with others and act accordingly. We are taught that kindness goes a long way. But what does that mean? Do we care only about what people think of us? Is it just so we can establish a status in society – an image of a person who is simply cordial and friendly? Of course not, everything is also related to the materialistic nature of human kind. But we will get to that in a second.
First of all manners are important when making a first impression. It is remarkable how important first impression is. When you do it properly it is unlikely that you will soon destroy it if people see you in a different light. On the other hand it is very difficult to fix it if you start on the wrong foot after meeting somebody. Without trying to be cynical we will give you an example regarding a man who speaks to a woman at let’s say a bar. This is where first impression is crucial as most women are now “immune” to the “go-to” lines that man usually use. This is why being well-mannered will pull you out of the stereotype and you just might look good in her eyes.

But the same goes for when you start working at a new place. We won’t even discuss the interview prior to you being hired as it is really all about first impression. But when you start somewhere that’s when you realise that you will be stuck with these people for a while and you might as well behave properly. This is why rookies usually bring treats the first day they start or maybe take colleagues to dinner. It is all because we want people to think that we are nice so that in the future when some trouble occurs or something is required of us we might somehow cut a corner and remain unnoticed.
You have surely noticed the level of politeness in all of the companies that provide any sort of customer service. They conduct special training sessions for their employees and show them how to be smiling and friendly all the time. Unfortunately many people aren’t very good at it. It just doesn’t come naturally to them and they look funny when looked from the side. Many customers notice their fake attitude and this can be a little alienating. This type of training is applied in all sorts of businesses. Not only among call centres and customer service companies but also in restaurants and even cleaning companies and removal agencies. The effect of good manners is astonishing. Sometimes it is even utilised for foul intentions. People who want to harm you and lure you into scams also use politeness as a weapon. Many financial pyramids and schemes use people who are good at talking and extremely well-mannered so that they can find more victims.
In the end though well-trained and kind employees are way better to deal with than grumpy ones. Even if we know they will have to scrape the smile off their face once they punch out we still enjoy being served by people in a good mood. And in the end their “hard work” usually pays off by you leaving them a tip. Such places can be:
